Prabowo’s National Car Dream Gains Momentum: Industry Minister Confirms Readiness

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Minister of Industry (Ministry of Industry) Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said that the domestic auto industry is ready to carry out a national car project, which is one of the strategic policies of President Prabowo Subianto.

“The industry is ready. I have also talked to the company. The brand already exists, and the company I have also met,” Agus said in his remarks in Jakarta, Thursday (23/10/2025).

The Minister explained that it had proposed that the national car program could be included in the list of National Strategic Projects (PSN). The proposal letter, he said, had already been sent to the National Development Planning Board (Bappenas) for consideration.

“Last week I already signed a letter addressed to Minister Bappenas,” Agus said.

According to him, the determination of the status of PSN will speed up the implementation process, from the preparatory stage to the production of national vehicles.

“With the determination of PSN status, it should be that all matters related to preparation, implementation, until later commissioning can be faster, according to the expectations of Mr. President,” he said.

Earlier, President Prabowo Subianto said that the government has started the initial steps to present Indonesian-made cars within the next three years.

“Brothers, this is not yet an achievement, but we are already starting to start. We will have Indonesian-made cars in the coming three years,” Prabowo said in his introductory speech to the Plenary Cabinet Session at the State Palace, Jakarta, Monday (20/10/2025).

Prabowo said that the government has prepared an allocation of funds and land for the construction of a factory that will produce national vehicles. Currently, the development team is preparing all the needs to realize the project.

The president also alluded that Indonesia had previously successfully produced the Maung light tactical vehicle used by military officials and officers. The vehicle made by PT Pindad is an example of the national industry's ability to produce vehicles with local components.
